Tile
Floor tile is most often made of ceramic, stone, or glass, thanks to recent technological advances. Ceramic tiles may be painted and glazed and small mosaic tiles may be laid in various patterns. Floor tiles are typically set into mortar consisting of sand, cement and sometimes a latex additive for extra holding power. Nowadays, the spaces between the tiles are filled with sanded or unsanded floor grout rather than traditional mortar. Express Floors To Go carries a variety of tile, with many styles, patterns and textures to choose from:
- Natural stone tiles can be beautiful but less uniform in color and pattern because they are naturally produced and require more planning for use and installation.
- Mass produced stone tiles are uniform in width and length.
- Granite or marble tiles are sawn on both sides and then polished or finished on the facing up side, so that they have a uniform thickness.
- Other natural stone tiles such as slate are typically “riven” (split) on the facing up side so that the thickness of the tile varies slightly from one spot on the tile to another and from one tile to another.
Certain types of stone tiles, such as polished granite, marble and travertine, tend to be very slippery when wet, so may not be the best choice for areas around pools or beach communities. Cermanic tile can be made slip resistant by using small tiles so that grout lines act as grooves. Softer stone tiles, such as limestone, are not ideal for high traffic floor areas and may show wear and tear much quicker than more durable types of tile. The life of your natural stone tile floor can be maximized by using a sealant, and periodically resealing them. Only the grout lines in ceramic tile floors require sealant.
The experts at Express Floors To Go can help you choose the best type and style of tile most suitable for your lifestyle.
